William was born about 1585. He was the eldest son of George Sinclair 2nd Laird of Mey and grandson of George Sinclair 4th Earl of Caithness. He was still alive in 1636 and may have still been alive in 1647. Sir William was knighted possibly on 11th December 1592 when he was granted a charter of lands by James IV.
