Research Notes

Banks-3765By 1797, a "2nd" Buncombe County Nathaniel Banks appeared, while apparently the Wilkes County Nathaniel remained in Wilkes County. See the 1797 Land Transaction wherein "Nathaniel of Buncombe"was witness to a land transaction where John Banks sold 100 acres on Hooper's Creek, Buncombe. At the same time in 1800, the other Nathaniel Banks (see 1800 Wilkes Census) was enumerated in the 1800 Wilkes Census at age above 45 yrs.

The Nathaniel Banks who was age 74, born in Tenn, listed as "Nat" on the 1850 Buncombe, NC Census is not a direct Banks-3765 ancestor. For many years I had believed that he was until I found his will probated which listed his 4 children. This pretty much clarifies that he is a different Nathaniel than the one who lived in Wilkes County about the same time frame. Nathaniel, from Wilkes, was my ancestor. Nathaniel, from Buncombe, was living with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Jane, age 39, in the 1850 Buncombe, NC Census. There were three younger people living with them which were probably Jane's children. This family enumerated on Page 473, House #238, # 583, all born in North Carolina except for father, Nathaniel who was age 74 at the time, and was born in Tennessee. He owned property valued at $2800. On the census record, under the "Married in last Two Years," there was a check mark; so he must have married Elizabeth around 1848 in Buncombe Co. Note that in house #588, just five houses away lived Rebecca Banks, age 50, b NC and W.I. Banks, age 21 (male) b NC, Page 475/239. Most likely a younger sister or sister-in-law, or even a daughter, or daughter-in-law to Nathaniel Banks. The two boys could have been her children. Not likely his because of his age.
