He practiced law with his father after 1873. He was Associate Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, 1902-1910, and Chief Justice, 1910-1913; United States Senator from Tennessee, 1913-1925; he inherited his father's home, "Clinchdale," where he died in 1934.[1]
His first wife was Mary G. Fulkerson (1858-1881), whom he married in 1881. She died that same year at age 23.
He as his second wife married Jeannette (Dodson) Cowan, daughter of William Edward Dodson and Charity Ann Swepson. They were married 7 Dec 1912 in Manhattan, New York City; both had been widowed.[2] She was born 22 May 1861 and died 18 Sep 1934 at Clinchdale. She was the mother of Jeannette Cowan Heth.[3] [4]
