Engela was born in 1848. Engela Grobler ... She passed away in 1918. During the second Boer War she was interned with her daughters in the concentration camp at Turffontein, Johannesburg, South Africa. Although there was a deep hatred by the Boer women against the British because of the scorched earth tactic employed against the Boers, she lived up to her name, Engela- Angel, and saw the British soldiers for what they actually were, little boys, far from there mothers. So she mothered them, much to the ire of her compatriots.
