Biography

Leoluchina Armato is born 20 May 1871 in her parents' home on via Sant'Agostino in Corleone. She is the daughter of Pasquale Armato and Bernarda Colletti.^[1][2][3] She is named after her paternal grandmother.

Leoluchina marries Rocco Lagumina, son of the late Rosario Lagumina and the living Maria Teresa Palazzo, on 27 July 1887.^[3] Based on her reported age in 1905 and at her death, Leoluchina is sixteen when she marries.

Leoluchina and Rocco have eight known children: two sons named Rosario (1888 and 1889), Teresa (1891), Augusta (1893), Maria and Pasquale (1896), Antonino Luciano (1899), Francesco (1901).

The first son named Rosario is baptized 13 July 1888.^[4] He is presumed to have died in infancy, before the second son named Rosario is born. He is baptized 16 November 1889.^[5]

Teresa is baptized 16 September 1891.^[6]

Augusta is baptized 15 August 1893.^[7]

Maria and Pasquale are twins, baptized 24 May 1896.^[8] Pasquale is named after his maternal grandfather.

Antonino Luciano is baptized 21 January 1899.^[9]

Francesco is baptized 26 August 1901.^[10]

Leoluchina, age 34 (b. 1871) immigrates on the SS Italia, arriving in New York on 13 November 1905. She accompanies her children, Rosario La Gumina, 16 (b. 1889), Teresa, who appears as Assunta La Gumina, 14 (b. 1891), Augusta La Gumina, 12 (b. 1893), Pasquale La Gumina, 9 (b. 1896), Maria La Gumina, 9 (b. 1896), Antonino La Gumina, 6 (b. 1899), and Francesco La Gumina, 4 (b. 1901). They are going to Leoluchina's uncle (possibly her brother) Giuseppe Armato at 235 E. 97th St. On the same manifest, Giuseppe La Gumina, 16 (b. 1889), a carpenter, appears. He is going to his uncle Giovanni Rumore, and his brother, whose name I cannot read, at 2089 2nd Ave.^[11]

In 1906, Leoluchina's father and two of her sisters emigrate, also joining her brother Giuseppe at the same address.

In late 1909, Giuseppe, his niece's husband, Leoluca Vasi, and his brother-in-law, Domenico Milone, are arrested and indicted for participating in Giuseppe Morello's counterfeiting operation.

Leoluchina La Gumina dies in Manhattan on 5 March 1942. Her address is 22-1/2 Linden Ave, Ossining, NY. She is a widow and a housewife.^[2]
