Tilden followed in his fathers footsteps taking over his general merchandise store in the early 1900's. The store was located in Indian Mound at the corner of Highway 46 and Honey Fork Road. In the early 1900's life was tough and money scarce, Tilden and Ida lived in the back of the store building, where all but the last child was born. He saved his money and lived very frugal until he had enough to build his own house. He built his house right behind his store, at the time of this writing the house still stands(2017). Around 1954 he was on the brink of closing his store and retiring, at the age of 78 years, but he and his daughter-in-law worked out a deal and became partners and continued to operate the store until around 1955 when it was destroyed by fire. Tilden was very active in the community, he was County Tax Assessor in 1911, a member of the Stewart County School Board for many years, Constable of Indian Mound for a number of years, and a member of the Stewart County Court. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and Woodman of the World.

Running a general merchandise in a rural farming community was a very important community function in the early years. Almost all of his customers were farmers and would only receive money from their crops after harvesting, also only once a year. Everything bought during the year would be "written up" and when the money crop was sold, they would bring their checks and the store keeper would cash the checks giving them what was left over, providing there was anything left over. Many would leave the left over cash with the store owner, much like in later years would be done with banks. Unfortunately as the times were so tough the amounts of money left on the books after the crops were sold grew from year to year as to become unbearable for the store keepers. Many would default, others would lower the limits of debt allowed before they had to stop writing it up. There were a few families that suffered from the last named option and would run up a bill in all stores until they were cut off by all merchants. At which time they would become desperate. Many families in the community would help to their utmost ability in lendering the hardships of the times. I can remember as a small child being in my Grandfathers store and seeing a young boy come in and gathering a few food items and trying to have it written up. When my Grandfather refused to write it up and required cash or put it back, the boy left and I kind of kept my eye on him and I saw him walk around to the back up the store where there was a chicken coup where the live chickens were kept that were sold in the store. He opened the coup and caught a chicken and walked back around to the front of the store and swapped the chicken for the food items that he had wanted in the first place. My Grandfather, Tilden then took the chicken through the store and out the back door where he placed the chicken back in the coup where it had just came from. I tried to advise him of what had just happened, but I was just shushed and he went on with his business. He knew! It was just his way of handling the situation.

Tilden was the owner of an 102 acre farm in the Rorie hollow, deeded[6] to him by his father in November of 1910. This farm was deeded to his youngest son Billy Mann Vaughan [7] in February of 1955.

He also owned a farm down River Road, I have heard that this was where his father lived when he first arrived in Indian Mound, but more research is needed to prove this. This land was later deeded (need citation) to his Oldest son, Oscar Tilden Vaughan. On this farm there was a cliff and this cliff was used by the Mound Builders to quarry the stone slabs used their burial caskets. Butter Smith showed me this when I was was about 10-12 years old. I believe this farm is today (2017) within the Wild Life Preserve.
