Research Notes
FamilySearch has some sources for an 11 Oct 1585, Chillenden, Kent, England marriage of Thomas Welles to Joan Barband and Johan Barber (at Chislete, Kent, same date), but it is not known if this is the correct spouse.
FamilySearch shows the mother of at least one of the attached children to be Elizabeth Kemball (1568-1640), but no sources are shown to prove a connection.
This is an unconfirmed match, but is shown in his line with him as the ancestor of successive generations in the line: Thomas Welles was mentioned on a memorial in St Botolph's Priory, Colchester, Colchester Borough, Essex, England with a death date of 26 May 1620. An additional memorial may be the same person as that memorial just above-listed, but nevertheless shows son Thomas Wells (1605-1666), but without any source citations: Thomas Wells was mentioned on a memorial with a death date of 26 May 1620. There is a question to whether his parents are John Welles (1539-1572) and Alice Bryan (1544-1615) or Robert Welles and Alice Hunt Welles. Even the name of his wife is in question. This could be due to an incorrect profile merge.
Dea. Thomas Wells was previously connected to this profile as a son - has been disconnected due to lack of evidence and citation.
Ann Hunt and Helen Sidney were removed as spouses of this profile, as they are not officially recognized spouses of this person.
Birth/Death dates and places were corrected based on multiple sources. Previous dates might have been due to an incorrect merge.

I don't believe this is a profile for the same person as the Governor of Connecticut. He needs to be detached from the parents, which belong to the Governor. I will do so.
This page is a mess and needs fixing. Thomas Welles born of Robert Welles and Alice Robert Hunt, - was the first Gov of Connecticut Colony. his facts are documented and well known. He died in Connecticut, not England. he is a famous person, and my great grandfather. This page appears to be the result of a bungled merge.
This is a work in progress. There are a few Thomas Welles. His wife and mother are listed with the same maiden name. Also different sources mention John Welles as a possible father.
Why is Thomas Welles shown as son of [father unknown] and Alice (Hunt) Welles ? Was Alice's husband Robert Welles, Sr. not the father of Thomas Welles? I'd like to know, as i am a descendant of Thomas Welles, and of his mother Alice (Hunt) Welles, and wonder whether i am also a descendant of Alice Hunt's husband. I now see that there is another Alice Hunt Welles, wed to another Thomas Welles, who also have a son Thomas Welles. Please help figure out this twisted line!
