John Saxton was born March 7, 1761 in Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut, British Colonial America. He was the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Saxton. [1]
John served during the Revolutionary War as a Private in David Smith’s Company, commanded by Colonel Chandler, in the 8th Regiment, Connecticut Continental line. He enlisted on May 26, 1777 at Waterbury and served three years until discharged under Col. Sherman on May 7, 1780 in Westfield, New Jersey. He was in the battle of Germantown, then in Mud Island Fort, or Fort Mifflin, on the Delaware while the British laid siege to that fort, and was in the Monmouth Battle. [2]
John Saxton married Mary Fenn about 1781 in Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut. [3]
In 1810, in the company with several others, including the Matthews, Merrills, Olmsteds and Moores, they located in Wolcott, New York, where their daughter Polly married Jesse Olmsted in October 1817. Note: Wolcott at the time was in Seneca County, but became Wayne County in 1823. [4][5][6]
John Saxton applied for a pension in 1818 in Wolcott, New York, explaining it was due to reduced circumstances. He was awarded $8 per month and his final payment voucher indicated he died in Wolcott on August 24, 1824. [7][8][9]
