Birth

Bell York, III was born 11 Oct 1771, to Bell York, II and Anna (Brown) York in Stonington.[1][2]

Research Note

History of Stonington incorrectly has his date of birth listed as 10 Apr 1771.[2]

Marriage

Bell married Polly Purchase either in Connecticut or in New York, though the Profile Manager suspects it was in New York as that may be where she was from (still looking for proof one way or the other).[3]

Bell and Polly had the following children:

Sally York, m. John Burroughs (? Burrow?). They moved to Pennsylvania and had 10 children.[3]
Nancy York, m. Giles Main. They also moved to Pennsylvania and had no children.[3]
Polly York, m. Enoch Burroughs (? Burrows?), brother of John (above). They lived in Pharsalia, New York and had 11 children.[3]
Electa York, m. Thomas Main, brother of Giles (above). They lived in Brookfield, New York and had 11 children.[3]
Deborah York, m. Edson Miner. They lived in Otselic, New York and had 2 children.[3]
Tama York, m. James Talbot. They lived in Edmeston, New York and had no children.[3]

  • In 1802 Bell and his family resided on Lot 550 in Brookfield, then Chenango County of New York, and his personal estate was valued at $29.[4]
1802 New York Tax Roll, Brookfield, Chenango, New York.
  • In 1850, living in Brookfield, then Madison County of New York, with his wife, Polly. Their property was valued at $900 at that time.[5]
  • Historical Interest: Brookfield, New York was settled in 1791, and established in 1795 as part of Chenango County. In 1805 it was moved to Madison County.[6]

According to the 1850 Unites States Census, Bell was a Farmer.[5]

Death and Will/Probate

Death

Bell (III) died on 17 Apr 1852, and is buried in an unknown location, though most likely in Brookfield.[7]

Probate

The Probate Record (begins on page 406 of the New York County, District and Probate Courts, frame #235 on Ancesrty.)

  • Initially his son Zebulon tried to have it entered on the 4th day of April, in 1854, however, he failed to show proof of service to a family member or two, so the Judge carried it over to 13 Jun 1854, to give him time to complete that requirement.

Will

In his will he left:

  • To his beloved wife, Polly (Purchase) York, all of his personal property, all of the use and income of from the real estate that he resided on.
  • Upon the death of his beloved wife all of the real estate, mention above, is to be transferred to his son Galusha, and he also requested that Galusha be the sole executor of his will.

Witnesses to the Will of Bell York, III were Ira Palmer and Silas Graham. (Frame #236)[8]
