Capt Garland Lloyd was a Prisoner of War during World War II.
Early Life
Garland Brooke Lloyd was the son of Orange Judd and Sarah A Given(s) Lloyd, born in Braxton County, West Virginia on June 26, 1916. [1] He grew up in Braxton County, West Virginia, and moved with his family to the Ohio, then to Canada, then back to Braxton County, as his father worked in the lumber industry.[2] Garland married Grace Louise Stoutamire, a Florida native. She gave birth to a son while Garland was away in the war and lived in Tallahassee for the duration of the war. [1]
World War II Story
Lt. Garland Lloyd served in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II Service started: Unit(s): 95th Bomb Group. 334th Bomb Squadron Service ended:
Garland Lloyd elisted in the US Army Air Corps in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 3, 1941.[3]
He was assigned to the 95th Bombardment Group and flew 21 missions in B-17's over Germany from December 11, 1943 to March 6, 1944. [4](Photo of the 334 Sqn here) On mission #92, the destination was Berlin, Germany. The B-17, piloted by Lt. Lloyd, crashed after sustaining damage from a German fighter attack over Holland. The entire crew bailed when the wing caught fire. Lt. Lloyd evaded capture for a time, hiding at a farm in the Netherlands. [5]In July he was was discovered by the Gestapo and held at Stalag Luft I until it was liberated by the Russians in 1945. [6][7][8] While he was imprisoned, Lt. Lloyd engaged his fellow prisoners by organizing classes in salesmanship and public speaking. (He had been a salesman in civilian life.) He taught his classes three days a week in the mess hall. [1] The camp was liberated by Russian troops on 1 May 1945.[9]
