A photo of this stone is available on the FindAGrave memorial for Sgt Rufus Hurlbut which states that "he was killed during surrender at the Battle of Groton Heights, Fort Griswold (Groton) by a bayonet wound to the chest.".[2] Hurlbut states that Rufus "was a soldier in Ft. Griswold at the time of British attack, and was one of the garrison who suffered massacre at its capture Sept. 6, 1781."[3]
Groton was established in 1705. Wikipedia:Ledyard, Connecticut includes history of Groton being renamed Ledyard in 1836 "for Colonel William Ledyard, slain commander of Colonial forces in the Battle of Groton Heights in September 1781, the town was set off from Groton in 1836 by an act of the Connecticut Legislature." However during the life of Rufus present day Ledyard was still called Groton. There he was born the son of John Hurlbut and Mary Stoddard.[4]
Rufus married Hannah, daughter of Peter Lester. They had nine children born in Groton between 10 Sep 1765 and 10 July 1780. Descendants of Rufus have usually written their name Hurllbutt.[3]
