E.C. Gober was a police judge first elected in 1929 as one of a slate of candidates associated with City Commissioner Clyde Tingley called "Greater Albuquerque." E.C. was re-elected as police judge for the last time in 1946, even as the rest of the slate was replaced by a new slate calling itself the "Better Government" ticket.[1]
Clipping from newspaper dated July 28, 1949: "Elgan C. Gober, former police judge and justice of the peace here, was ruled physically incapable of managing his affairs yesterday by District Judge Edwin J. Swope.
The ruling resulted from an incompetency suit brought by Mr. Gober's wife. Judge Swope ruled that Mr. Gober had been so physically incapacitated by reason of an operation that he could not manage his affairs. Mrs. Gober was named manager of the community property they hold."
Family lore says this operation was a lobotomy performed for depression. Family letters from 1949-1950 indicate he was hospitalized in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
