Biography

Charles Brown Craig was born in Lanark, Lanark, Ontario to Robert Craig and Jane (brown) Craig. Somehow he made it to the farm of Thomas Dixon close to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He was the "hired man" at first but his position was elevated when he married Tom's daughter and became the son-in-law. It is not known if this happened before or after Thomas Dixon's death (7 Nov 1864). The burial place of Tom is unknown. He was supposed to have died at Paris, Ontario, Canada. We next find the family farming around Winfred. South Dakota. His 3rd and 4th child was born there from 1890-1892. His first two children were born in Lambton County Ontario Canada. Farming may not have agreed with Charles because the family went on the move. In Calhoun, Mississippi his fifth child Margaret Ann was born 24 Oct 1896. His last stop was in Horatio, Arkansas. They seemed to be moving back north. One family member reported he contracted malaria. He either took too much of the prescribed medicine or had got the wrong medicine. In ether case he died. The grave is unmarked. Family members have search for it but it's location is lost forever. The family destitute moved in with Craig's brother in North Dakota and finally back to Winfred, South Dakota courtesy of Joseph Dixon, Craig's brother-in law. Joseph Dixon migrated to South Dakota at the same time as the Craig family.
