Amos Slaymaker was born in London Lands, Pennsylvania.He married Isabella Fleming.[1]
He built and operated a hotel on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, the Stage House.[2] During the Revolutionary War, he served as an ensign in the company of his uncle Capt. John Slaymaker. He was a member of an association formed for the suppression of Tory activities in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He served as justice of the peace of Salisbury Township, Pennsylvania, and county commissioner from 1806 to 1810. He served in the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1810 and 1811.
Slaymaker was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Whitehill. During his time in Congress, Slaymaker was one of a small group of businessmen who averted a crisis and enabled prosecution of the War of 1812 by using their personal credit to guarantee loans to the federal government. He did not run for reelection to a full term and returned to his business interests.[3][4] He died in Salisbury, Lancaster County, Pa., June 21, 1837; interment in Leacock Presbyterian Cemetery, Paradise, Lancaster County, Pa. He is buried in plot Slaymaker Row[5]
