Thomas Jefferson Stephenson was born August 6, 1884[1] in Erath County, Texas[2] (see Research notes, Birth Location) to parents William Thomas Stephenson and Susan Malissa Peay. Thomas’ father William died 1898 in Magazine, Logan, Arkansas when he was 13. [3]. At this time, Thomas was likely living in Arkansas with his family, which consisted of his mother, four brothers and two sisters. It is likely he had quit school by this time to help support the family. He had only went to school through the sixth grade. [4] No other details are known of his childhood. Assuming he remained with his family until adulthood, he would have been in Texas and Arkansas through his childhood and possibly moving on to Oklahoma before becoming an adult.
In 1940, Thomas was shown in the census as the owner of a pool hall in Henryetta. [4] It is interesting to note that his son-in-law, Homer Horner also lists his employment as at a pool hall on the same census page. The two were neighbors living on Henry street in Henryetta. Thomas is found on line 51 and Homer is found on line 56. The capacity of this business relationship (joint owners or other) is yet to be discovered.
Career & Military
Thomas did not serve in the military. Through his life, he was a carpenter, [6] a miner [7] and the owner of a pool hall. [4]
Death & Burial
Thomas died December 30, 1949 in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. [8] He was laid to rest at Grand View Memorial Park and Crematory in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. His gravesite is located at section M, Tier 35, Grave 82. [9]

Birth Location
Thomas' birth location is listed as Duncan, Stephens County, Indian Territory (pre Oklahoma statehood) on his 1941 delayed birth certificate. [1] For his son Jimmie's birth certificate, he lists Erath County, Texas as his birthplace. [2] If you reference the 1910 census, it is Kentucky, [13]
but the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses list his birth location as Texas. [7][14][4] His son Jimmie stated he was from Texas. [15] Additionally, his family in the 1880 census was enumerated twice, once in Eastland County and again in Stephens County, Texas. [16][17] Both counties are either neighboring (Eastland), or close to (Stephens) Erath County. Though it is possible Thomas was born in Duncan, Indian Territory, The evidence points to Erath, Texas as his most likely place of birth.
‘’’Census records’’’
Thomas has yet to be found in the 1900 census. All other census records (1880, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940) are accounted for.
