Biography

1776 Project
John Beatty Sr. served with Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

John BEATTY was born in 1763, in Donegal, Donegal, Ireland, to possibly Stephen Beatty and Christiana Duncan. There are no records yet of that parentage, though many ancestry profiles do assign Stephen as father to John. In the 1790 Census, Stephen Beatty is one line up from John, making it more likely he is the parent.

John Beatty joined the Pennsylvania Militia as a private in the American Revolution. Date unknown. There is also a John Beatty, Colonel, in the Continental Army who was captured and was a prisoner of the British. Military date: 18 Mar 1780 Rank: Col & Com Gen Pris [1]

He received a pension from the Pennsylvania Militia for his service in the American Revolution: [2]

Name: John Beatty
Rank: Private
Birth Date: 1763
When placed on the pension roll: 15 Jan 1834
Age:71
County Mifflin Commencement of pension: 4 Mar 1831
Annual Allowance:30.00
Sums received: 90.00
Description of service: Pennsylvania militia

He married Nancy GLASS around 1786 in Pennsylvania. They had 9 children:

Elizabeth 1787
Nancy 1794
Mary 1795
William 1796
James 1796
John 1800
Jane 1802
Margaret 1807
Sarah 1807

In each of the following Census' the dates of each child match up. By 1820, Elizabeth and Nancy are probably married. In 1830, the only odd one is a male under 10, but might be one of their grand-children.

In the 1790 US Census he is living with 3 females. Likely, his wife Nancy and daughter Elizabeth and an unknown 3rd female.

In the 1800 US Census he is living with 3 males under 10; 2 females under 10; 1 male 26-44; 1 female 26-44; 1 female 10-15.

In the 1820 US Census he is living with 3 males 16-25; 2 females 10-15; 2 females 16-25; 1female 26-44; 1 male and 1 female 45 and over.

In the 1830 US Census he and Nancy are living with 1 male under 10; 1 female 15-19; 2 females 20-29; and 1 male 30-40.

John Beatty died on June 27, 1840, in Armagh, Pennsylvania, and was buried in the Milroy Presbyterian Cemetery in Milroy, Pennsylvania, the only Revolutionary grave in the cemetery.

Story

Posted by Elizabeth Ann Walters-Wilenius on Geni.com:

"I was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1763 and when I was two, we came to America and Armagh Township, Pennsylvania. My father left me a third ownership of their farm when he died and my brother William and his wife lived there. The Beatty's Knob school house was built in the year 1840 in Mifflin County, It was located on the northwest corner of the property of my wife and I. This house was a frame one with a shingle roof and weather boardings put on in the rough. The inside had long desks along three sides of the house facing the wall. The first teacher was George Ehrenfeld and last was William C McClenahan. I wrote my will April 1840. I died in Armagh Twp, Mifflin County in Pennsylvania on April 27, 1840 and am buried next to my wife Nancy in Milroy Cemetery in Armagh Cemetery." [[2]][3]
