Daniel was born in 1749, the Son of Capt Joseph Aborn and Elizabeth Scranton[1]. Daniel Aborn married Mary Arnold in Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island 9 January 1769.[2] Children include:
In the family tradition, Daniel was a master mariner. An early patriot, he and several of the Rhode Island Aborns are rumored to have taken part in planning and conduct of the raid on the Gaspee in 1772. His uncle Col Samuel (or possibly grandfather Samuel) definitely profited from the salvage.[4]. Daniel, along with Samuel, Anthony and James of the Aborn clan were also charter members of the Pawtucket Rangers formed in 1774. [5]
During the American Revolution, he was a privateer Captain of the new 12 gun sloop Chance. It sailed from Providence on May 11, 1782 with a crew of 65 but within a few days was captured by the 26 gun British ship Belisarius. The captured crew were brought to Brooklyn New York and imprisoned on the British prison ship Jersey in deplorable conditions. His master‘s mate Thomas Dring wrote a manuscpit 25 years later detailing the ordeal. Daniel eventually was paroled to arrange a prisoner exchange for the remaining 35 members of his crew, appealing directly to British General Clinton and General George Washington.[6] Daniel’s post-war life was short. He soon fathered another child, put to sea again, and was bound for the West Indies where during a gale it is believed the ship foundered and all hands were lost. He is recorded lost at sea in 1783.[7]
