In 1850 he was living with his family in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.[2]
He was most likely the Joseph Abshire murdered on April 30, 1863 in a raid by Confederate soldiers. There is a memorial in Abshire Cemetery which honors 11 men killed April 30, 1863 in the Civil War which includes his name.[3]
For the story behind the memorial,[4]
