U.S. Congressman. Born the son of Congressman Nathaniel Gorham, he graduated from Harvard University in 1795, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1814-18) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1819-21). In 1821, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jonathan Mason and reelected as Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, serving until 1823. He was elected as an Adams candidate to the Twentieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Daniel Webster in 1827, reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress, serving (1827-31) and elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress, serving (1833-35). After leaving Congress, he serving in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, in 1841 and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 80.
Benjamin died (age 80y 5m) on 27 September 1855 in Boston, Massachusetts.[3] Benjamin was mentioned on a memorial in Phipps Street Burying Ground, Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States with a death date of 27 Sep 1855.[4]
