Biography

John Doyle is Notable.

"John Doyle... known by the pen name H. B., was a political cartoonist, caricaturist, painter and lithographer..." ^[1]

He was born in Dublin in 1797, the son of a silk mercer whose family, which was Catholic, was of Norman descent, had once owned estates in Laois and Offaly but had been dispossessed.

His father James was listed as a tailor living at 15 St Andrew Street. His brother James entered the Catholic priesthood and both of his sisters became nuns.^[2]

John (22) married Marianna Conan (24) (born in 1795 in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland) in February, 1820 in Dublin, Ireland. at St Andrew's church, Dublin. Her father was also listed as a tailor living in Trinity Place, Dublin. ^[3] Their children were:

1. James William Edmund Doyle (1822–1892) . married late in life, no children
2. Richard Doyle (1824–1883) . unmarried
3. Henry Edward Doyle (1827–1892 married late in life, no children
4. Charles Altamont Doyle (1832–1893)
5. Annette or Ann Martha b 1821 Dublin became a nun in the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in Kensington, England.
6. Francis b 1829 died in 1843 buried South Metropolitan cemetery.
7. Adelaide b 1831 died 2 Apr 1844 from consumption, buried South Metropolitan cemetery.

He moved to London with his wife, Marianna Conan, where he struggled to establish himself as a painter of portraits in oil and miniature.
