Willis Hubbard served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: Sep 23, 1864 Mustered out: May 8, 1865 Side: USA Regiment(s): 32nd Indiana Infantry
Willis Hubbard was born on July 10, 1827,[1] in Indiana.[2] He was the son of John Hubbard and Nancy Weddle.[3] His family arrived in Indiana in about 1821, initially settling in Washington County, and then moving further north to settle in Monroe County, Indiana, some time before 1830.[4] This area was part of the region in central Indiana acquired from the Delaware and other Indian tribes
by the Treaty of St. Mary in 1818. Willis' family appears in Monroe County in 1830.[5]
Willis Hubbard married Rebecca Hartsock in Monroe County, Indiana, on February 29, 1848.[6][7] This young couple appears with their first born child living in Monroe County near Willis' parents John and Nancy, and his siblings Levi and Elzira, in 1850.[2] They had three sons between 1849-1853, but then Rebecca appears to have died in about 1855, in Monroe County.[8]
On February 3, 1856, Willis remarried to Eliza Jane Milton in Monroe County, Indiana.[9] In 1860, his household in Monroe County included his second wife Eliza Jane, three sons from his first marriage, and the first child of Willis and Eliza Jane. He was employed as a shoemaker.[10]
On September 23, 1864, at the age of 37, Willis mustered in to the 32nd Indiana Infantry unit, where he served until being mustered out on May 8, 1865.[11] This unit was assigned to garrison duty in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during the period of his service.[12]
After the war, Willis and Eliza Jane continued raising their growing family and Willis returned to his business as a shoe and bootmaker in Monroe County, Indiana.[13] Some time around 1880, they moved west to Illinois, settling first in Richland County,[14] and later in immediately adjacent Jasper County, where Willis lived until he died.[15]
Willis died in Jasper County, Illinois, on September 30, 1907.[1][16]

DNA
Although not formally triangulated, the frequent identification of Willis Hubbard as the son of John Hubbard and Nancy Weddle is supported by at least nine AncestryDNA matches between Ancestry users claiming decent from Willis through his children David, Thomas, Lydia, and Esther Anna, on the one hand; and either Michael McClain or Mark McClain, both well-documented 3GGsons of John Hubbard and Nancy Weddle through their son Allen Martin Hubbard.
Research Notes
The relationship between Willis and his parents John and Nancy Hubbard is not clearly documented in any of the original sources cited in this profile, but it is corroborated by the DNA evidence discussed above and consistent with his name and presence in Monroe County, Indiana, in 1848; and the presence of two sons aged 0-5 who appear in John's household in 1830, and one son aged 10-14 in 1840. It is further supported by the appearance of his family nearby the family of John and Nancy Hubbard (and the families of older siblings Levi Hubbard and Elzira Hendrickson) in the 1850 census.
Note that the Indiana archives source documenting Willis's Civil War service also returns a younger Willis Hubbard who enlisted in the 27th Indiana Infantry. This is not the same person; his pension record indicates died in a POW camp in Virginia in 1862.
