Military Service : Private, Company C, 7th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, Civil War, and served in Company C, 7th Regiment U.S. Cavalry

Civil War Record :

Benjamin Solomon Newport joined the Union Army on August 1, 1862 at Huntsville, Scott County, Tennessee, as a private in Company C, 7th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. He received a disability discharge from his commanding officer, Col. William Clift, at Fishing Creek, Pulaski County, Kentucky, on October 31, 1862, having contracted rheumatism due to exposure. In an application for a pension filed on June 3, 1889, Newport listed his age as 65, his height at 6- feet, with fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. An affidavit by Joshua Goad, 67, Hughett, Scott County, Tennessee, supported Newport's claim for a pension. Goad stated in his affidavit on September 25, 1891, that he saw the claimant on March 27, 1863 being confronted by rebels. He said Newport told them he had a discharge from the United States Army and they demanded to see it. He said Newport showed them the discharge and they took it from him and turned him loose. ( This entry was compiled from information contained in the soldier's pension record obtained from the National Archives by Robert Bailey, Kingston, TN. )
