Petition for a new NC county which was circulated through Mecklenburg Co NC in 1796.

That whereas your petitioners having for many years past laboured under a great disadvantage in living remote from the courthouse, some of us having 30 and some 40 miles to ride to court, and understanding that a considerable number of the citizens of Anson county labor under a like disadvantage, we have mutually agreed to petition your honourable body for redress of our grievance.

We therefore the citizens of Mecklinburg county on our part do petition your honourable body to form a new county between Mecklinburg and Anson by striking off that part of Mecklinburg which lies below a line drawn from the south Carolina line where it crosses the twelve mile creek up said creek with the branch of it on which David Orr lives to the source of sd branch, thence to the head of crooked creek to the Anson line and annex the part so cutt off to that part of Anson which shall be struck off, such a division would leave Mecklinburg compact with the court house near central and would include a sufficient extent of territory for a new county, we therefore hope you will take this our grievance into your wise consideration and grant this our petition, and we your humble petitioners as in duty bound shall ever pray ...
