In the below mentioned article, This young man made the active "choice" to take his brothers place in the war, and he was only 16yrs old at the time. His brother did later volunteer, after I'm assuming his wife got well, but its still amazing that this ancestor made that possible by sacrificing himself for someone he loved. Later, after the war, when his father in law died, again, this ancestor picked up and sold his property and moved near his wife's mother, I can only imagine to help her out and make sure she was ok with children still under age and she had lost her husband.

Born in Orange County, North Carolina, and it was from there he served in the Revolutionary War, having enlisted in April 1781. He married mary Craig in Orange County, on 29 October 1789. In 1803 James Mitchell sold his home in Orange County and lived for a short time in Logan County, Ky. He settled in Maury Co., Tn in 1809, where he became a charter member of Salem Presbyterian Church as well as a presiding elder. He and Mary Craig Mitchell were the parents of fourteen children. From Let the Drums Roll by Maurice Lightfoot Page 139 James Mitchell was born Dec. 20, 1765 in Orange Co., N. Carolina, where he was living when he entered service in April, 1781 as a substitute for his brother, Andrew Mitchell. Jame Mitchell was only sixteen yrs. old at the time, but since his older brother's wife was ill James took his place. He served this tour of duty under Captain William Douglas in Colonel Guilford Dudley's Regimet. Colonel Dudley's Regiment was engaged primarily in watching, pursuing, and suppressing the Tories i Chatham, randolph, and Guilford Counties, who were, ...constantly engaged in pillage and murders of the Whits... in committing many outrages on the persons and property of the Whig party... in doing mischief in the absence of armed forces of Whigs. In the fall of 1781, Mitchell volunteered for a second tour of duty of three months under Captain John Taylor. The company was stationed in Hillsborough as a guard over the Tory prisoners. In the fall of 1782 he substituted for Jon Pew and was in the Battle at Lewis Kirk's in Orange County and the battle at Cox's Mills against Colonel Fanning. Mitchell married Mary Craig in Orange County on Oct 29 1789. Her father, Captain David Craig, received a military grant of 3,200 acres of land om western North Carolina (later in Maury County Tennessee) for his services in the American Revolution. In 1803 James Mitchell sold his home in Orange County and lived for a short time in Logan County, Kentucky. In 1808 his widowed mother-in-law and her sons settled on the Craig grant in Maury County Tennessee. After a visit with them James Mitchell went back to Kentucky, sold his property there and in 1809 settled in maury Co. on a 640 acre tact, which he named the Boiling Springs Farm. He applied for a pension on Sept 4, 1832 and was awarded $30.00 per year for ine months' service as a private. James Mitchell was a charter member and elder of Salem Presbyterian Church, which in later years was known as Hunter's Meeting House. He died November 11, 1843 and was buried in the Hunter's Cemetery, on mile south of Mt. Pleasant. James and Mary Craig Mitchelll were the parents of 14 children, three of whom in infancy. Mary Mitchell was born in Orange Co., N. C., Nov 21, 1790; married Alexander Pickard on Sep. 14, 1814 in Maury Co.; and died of yellow fever in New Orleans, La. in Sep.1837. David Mitchell was born Mary 15, 1792 in Orange Co. N.C., and died of typhoid fever in Memphis Tn. in Jul, 1867.
