He was an English barrister and novelist and was a cousin of the fine writer Saki (1870-1916).
Popular in his day under the pseudonym Durnford Yates (his works are reminiscent of John Buchan) he is perhaps best known today his series of thrillers known as the 'Chandos' books, featuring the hero, Richard Chandos.
Married twice (his first marriage ended in divorce), he was the subject of a biography by A.J. Smithers, published in 1982.
