Biography

Church records show that Catherine “Caty” Rump Pool was born March 31, 1799 and baptized in Montgomery, Orange County, New York. ^{[1] [2]} Nevertheless, descendants give her birth as May 30, 1800, the date inscribed on her gravestone. ^[3] Her brother Daniel stated that she was probably born in New York City, but the exact location is unknown. ^[4] She was the daughter of Daniel Pool and Caty (Crans) Pool. ^[5]

According to an 1880 interview with her brother, Daniel Pool, ^[6] Catherine married Charles Chandler who was a wagon maker. They had 4 girls and 1 boy. Charles had died and Catherine was living with her daughter Sarah, about 80 miles from New York City. He gave the names of Catherine’s children as:

Mary, the oldest, born in Montgomery, married a Graham, a school teacher and now lawyer of Brooklyn NY; they have a son and daughter.

Catherine, married a White, a Manufacturer of “Paker Borks Boxes” for hats, etc.; wealthy resident of New York City.

Sarah, married a Skinner [Spooner] and is wealthy; her mother lives with her about 80 miles from New York.

Jane, unmarried.

Samuel, married and resides in the West as a Fur purchaser.

Catherine Pool (of Montgomery) married Charles Chandler on April 7, 1821 at the First Presbyterian Church at Goshen, New York. ^{[7] [8]}

Charles died in 1860. That year, Catherine was in Montgomery, New York. ^[9] By 1870, she was in Brooklyn with her daughter Mary Graham.^[10]

Catherine died on May 21, 1890 in Middletown, Connecticut. She is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Montgomery, Orange County, New York. ^[11]

Mrs. Catherine Chandler, aged 90, died on Wednesday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Henry S. White. The funeral services will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. Interment will be at Montgomery, N. Y. – Harford Courant, Hartford, Conn., Friday, May 23, 1890.
