She was the daughter of William Bingham and Anne Willing.
Aged 15 she was briefly married to a French aristocrat, Jacques Alexander, Comte de Tilly. [1]
After her father's death in 1804, oth his daughters stayed in England, Maria Matilda, the ex-wife of the comte de Tilly had married Alexander’s brother Henry in 1802. With this second marriage, Sir Francis’ retirement and the ascension of Alexander to the firm leadership, the bonds between the first families in British and American finance had been cemented. Maria Matilda had greater success with her second marriage than her first. The couple had three sons and two daughters. However, this marriage eventually failed too. She and Henry divorced in 1824. Maria Matilda moved to France where she married the French Marquis de Blaisel in 1826. One of her granddaughters married a comte de Noailles.[2]
