Augustus Barrington Price Hamilton was born on 21 May 1781 and was baptised on 13 June 1781 at St. Marylebone, Middlesex[1]. He was the son of Captain Charles Powell Hamilton and Lucretia Prosser. (He was also known as Augustus Barrington Price Anne Powell Douglas-Hamilton.)
He was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
He entered the Royal Navy in 1796, gaining the rank of Lieutenant in 1802. In 1800 he was in the frigate Phaeton which escorted the Earl of Elgin as Ambassador to Constantinople: ‘Mr Hamilton … assisted in cutting-out the Spanish ship “San Josef” near Malaga. Though shot through the thigh, he gallantly boarded with the rest, and was highly spoken of for his conduct’.
Augustus married Maria Catherine Hyde (the daughter of John Hyde and Mary Seymour) on 2 April 1805 at St George's, Hanover Square, London, by Licence[2]. The witnesses were John Payne and W. Plowden.
They went on to have at least 10 children; 8 sons and 2 daughters.
He lived at Fir Hill, Droxford, Hampshire, England.
He died on 27 August 1849[4].
His Will was proved on 26 November 1849.
