Biography

Jeremiah Godman was born in 1763, in Frederick County, Maryland, to Humphrey & Keziah Godman.[1] In 1776, amidst the American Revolution, Jeremiah was living with his family in the North West Hundred, Frederick, Maryland.[2] His household consisted of his father Humphrey (40), mother Keziah (32), Ann (15), himself (13), Patsey (11), Betsy (9), Tomma (7), Kesiah (6), Saml (4), Rebeckah (2), and Charlot (8 mos). His mother died shortly after that census was taken.[3]

Jeremiah married Dorcus "Patsy" Tucker about 1784 in Kentucky.[4] Their first child Permelia "Emily" Godman was born in 1785 in Kentucky.[5] By the time he reached the age of twenty-five (in 1789) his sons William B [6] and Allen B [7] had been born. In the year 1800 Jeremiah is found on the Bourbon County, Kentucky Tax List.[8] Jeremiah and Keziah had been blessed with four more children by then: Samuel,[9][10] Mary "Polly,"[11] John B,[12] and Nancy.[13][14]

Jeremiah's life was cut short in 1802, at the age of thirty-nine. He died a mere two years after his father. Jeremiah's probate files can be found in Bourbon County, documenting apprenticeships for the children and the estate disbursal.[15] His youngest child, Nancy, was only three years old.
