He was the son of Amos Pierce and Laura McArthur. He passed away in 1862.

Charles was born in 1843. He is the son of Samuel Paine and Mary Callow.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

ENLISTED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR ONE YEAR - Charles Paine was the eldest child of Samuel Paine and Mary Callow. The first two children of the couple were born in England. By the time they settled in Indian Lake in Hamilton County, NY, in 1851, they had three more children – all born in Canada. The family stayed in Indian Lake until after the last of their thirteen children was born and then moved with the eleven youngest children to Elk Point in Dakota Territory to farm.

Charles was placed on the Draft Registration records of 1863, and by September of 1864, he had enlisted in Plattsburgh as a substitute for Dillon Purdy Smith in the 5th Veteran Infantry. The regiment was made up from veterans, men who re-enlisted, and new recruits. At first, they served in its Defenses of Washington for a few months before they went to the field.

Charles didn’t join the regiment until just before the Battle of Hatcher’s Run in late October. They had two more engagements at Hatcher’s Run before setting off on the Appomattox Campaign in March 1865. During the campaign, they had 68 more casualties. Charles mustered out on May 31, 1865, in Alexandria, VA.

He farmed for the rest of his life in Indian Lake. His first wife, Sybil Gibson, died in 1890 and was buried in the Cedar River Cemetery in Indian Lake. He joined her there in 1913. When Wealthy Stanton, who he had married in 1894 died, she was buried in the same cemetery under the same stone. Dillon Smith, for whom Charles had substituted, died in 1907 and was buried in Glens Falls.
