Biography

Steve Ragland is a part of US Black heritage.

Steve Ragland was the son of Mary and Richard Ragland.^[1] In 1869, he married Ellen Ann Lemon. He died in 1926 in Paulding County, Georgia.

Steve and Ellen had the following children:

• Texanna (Texas) Ragland 1868-1962
• Charlie H Ragland 1870-1945
• Henry William Ragland 1872-1962
• Otis Ragland 1878-1943
• Angeline Ragland 1879- unknown

The 1850^[2]US Census for Henry County, Georgia, shows Stephen as a slave to L. Ragland. He is 2 years old.

According to 1870 Census, Stephen is 22 and Ellen Ragland is 23, they are shown as living in Georgia with children, Texas Ann who is 2 and Charlie who is a newborn son.

Per the^[3] 1880 Census, for Henry, Georgia, Stephen is, Head of Household, a farmer, he is Black, and living with his wife Ellen, and their children, Texas Ann, who is 12, Charlie who is 10, Henry is 8, and Angeline who is 1.

At the age of 15, their daughter Texas bore a son, Jerry M. Ragland. In 1892, Texas married Cosby Smith. Texas and Cosby and their children moved to Los Angeles, CA. Jerry stayed with Steve and Ellen Ragland.

US Census, 1900 for Henry, Georgia, shows Stephen to be Black, Head of Household, living with his wife, Ellen, and their child, Henry who is 30. Living with them also is their Grandson, Jerry Ragland who is 18.

Per death certificate occupation of Steve was shown as "none." His death was shown to be due to cancer. His race was shown as colored. Stephen Ragland and his wife Ellen Ragland are buried in the Red Oak United Methodist Church cemetery. The cemetery is located on Walt Stephens Road, just outside of the town of Jonesboro, Georgia.^[4]

According to death certificate of Jerry M. Ragland, his father is indicated as Steve Ragland. This may or may not be in error.
