Biography

He was the son of Benjamin Crocker. Bassett was born in 1782. He passed away on Feb 26, 1859[1].

It is a bit of a puzzle as to where he was from. The 1850 Census has him living in Woolwich and lists his place of birth as Maine but as a "ditto" in a long list of people born in Maine.[2] Perhaps that was an error because two other clues point to an origin in Massachusetts, specifically Barnstable, Massachusetts where many of the Crocker family settled. There are also families with the surname Bassett. Perhaps he is the child of a Bassett mother and Crocker father. The first clue to the Barnstable, Massachusetts origin is in the Vital Records of Woolwich. Bassett and Sarah's first child was Elizabeth Crocker, born on Jan 19, 1802 in Barnstable, Mass.[3] The second clue is the death record of his daughter Sarah (married William Blinn) who died in 1905 in Woolwich. Her death record lists her parents with mother's birthplace unknown and father's as Massachusetts.[4]
