Biography

  • Henry was born in 1847[1]. He was the son of Nelson Cheney and Emily McNally[2]. Henry married Mary Smith[3] and they had ten children. He passed away in 1917[4].
  • Henry served as a Private in No 2 Company of the 18th Battalion of Infantry during the Fenian Raids of 1866[5].
  • Henry worked as a tinsmith/proprietor at McCuaig Cheney in Vankleek Hill[6].
  • He lost his business and home in the Vankleek Hill fire of 1898[7]. Even though Henry was still living in Vankleek Hill in 1901, it is likely that these losses were a significant part of his decision to move to Winnipeg between 1901 and 1906.
