Disputed Lineages, Seneschals of Dol

This profile is affected by conflicting lineage provided in 1901 by J. Horace Round [1] and a century later in 200 by Paul A. Fox. [2] The two conflicting lineages and this profile's place in them are shown at Space: Round and Fox and the Seneschals of Dol.

Birth

Estimated birth year 1020. [2]

Parentage

Hato, son of Hato[2]

Sibling

Brother of Flaald. [2]

1050 Witnesses Charter

"Goscelinus de Dinam…Rivallonus frater eius…Arveus…Radulfus…filius Donnalloni" donated "suam partem de decima terræ sancti Paterni" to Angers Saint-Nicolas by charter dated to [1050], witnessed by "Fretaldus et Hato pater eius". [3]

Cawley notes that Paul Fox interprets the last phrase in this document and assumes that Hato was the father of Flaald...However, it is extremely unusual in contemporary documentation for a father to be named after his son. It is therefore more likely that "pater" in the document represents a transcription error for "frater" and that Hato was the same person as the brother of Flaald who is named in the following document. This of course does not prevent the brothers Flaald and Hato being the sons of the earlier Hato, but no source has been identified which confirms that this parentage is correct. "…

1060 Restoration to Mont Saint Michel

Hatonis fratris Flotardi…" witnessed the charter dated to [1060] under which "Guillaume fils de Rivallon" restored property to Mont-Saint-Michel, with the consent of "sa mère Heremburge et de ses frères Jean et Gelduin" [3]

1065 Gift to Mont St. Michel

Shortly after Rivallon's death in 1065, Rivallon's son William made a gift to Mont St.Michel signed at Dol and witnessed by Hato, brother of Flaald (Flotald). [4]
