Biography

Colonel [1]Solomon Dean was part of a corp of trappers (sappers?) and miners with General Washington's Army. Present at Newburgh, Brandywine, Valley Forge and Yorktown at time of Cornwallis's Surrender.

Artificer Solomon Dean served with Lt. Col. Luther Baldwin's Artificers, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Solomon Dean, Moses Dean (his father), Ashbel Dean (Solomon's brother) and Ezra Dean (artificer, Solomon's brother) enlisted on November 5 1777. [2] [3]

About 1774 Solomon Dean married Elizabeth ________ at Newburgh, New York. Their children were:

  1. Polly Dean (b. about 1775 d. as an infant)
  2. Polly Dean (born 1777 or 1779 in Vermont) m.Mr. Cooper
  3. Barbara Dean b. about 1780 [5]
  4. Reuben Robert Dean (b.25 Aug 1786 in Newburgh, Orange, d. 6 Dec 1845) m. Elizabeth Devine.

In 1776 he lived at Ulster, Land Bounty Rights 4th Reg't, described in New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, V.1, 1904, p.264

In 1785 Solomon is listed as a resident of Newburgh who can be assessed for highway labor. Also on the list is Benjamin Dean, probably his uncle Benjamin. [6]

In 1785 Solomon Dean was paid for a military tour of service on the Western frontier. [7]

In 1787 Solomon Dean died , leaving Elizabeth with Barbara, Polly, and Reuben. Later she married to Samuel Johnston.
