Hermann Enke was born in Altenburg, the capital of the small duchy of Sachsen-Altenburg (later a part of Germany) in 1842.[1]
He was baptized on 1 May 1842 at the Evangelische Kirche Gieba (AG. Altenburg) in Gödern, Sachsen-Altenburg, Thüringen, Deutschland. His parents were Gottfried Enke and Ernestine.[2]

During the American Civil War, Hermann enlisted in the 5th Regiment Missouri Cavalry. The 5th Regiment was organized by consolidation of Benton Hussars and 3 Companies of Hollan Horse on 14 February 1862. Hermann enlisted on 1 January 1862 as a private.

Hermann applied for a invalid's pension from his military service. After his death in 1891, his widow Christina applied and received a widow's pension.

After the war, Hermann married Christiana Hosfeld in 1866 in Missouri. They had the following children:

Research Notes

The provided baptism record is probably not belonging to him. The date doesn't match the date on the grave stone, and it makes no sence to baptize a child born in Altenburg in a smal village far outside the city. More research might be needed. Gutknecht-98 20:25, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
