Hugh Cayley is Notable.
Hugh Cayley is/was a significant British Columbian.

Hugh St. Quentin Cayley (November 19, 1857 – April 13, 1934) was a Canadian lawyer, news reporter and politician. He was the son of William Cayley and Emma Robinson Boulton.[1][2]

The 1881 census lists Hugh, age 23, in his parents' household in Toronto.[3]

Hugh studied law at the University of Toronto and then joined a law firm before embarking on journalism, initially as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. In 1884 he moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he joined the staff of the Calgary Herald, of which he became publisher in 1885. The following year he was elected to the North-West Territories Legislature, giving up his newspaper interests. He served three terms in the Legislature.

After leaving politics Hugh returned to the law, initially practicing in the British Columbia mining district at Golden,[4] then relocating to Vernon,[5] where at age 39 in summer 1897, he married 24-year-old Leonora Adelaide Cochrane,[1][6] daughter and sister of his legal associates William and Walter Cochrane.

The group moved southward to Grand Forks, where son Beverley was born, and reuniting in partnership with brother-in-law Walter, he offered legal services within the area mining districts.[7][8] In 1905 the family moved to Revelstoke,[9] but by the end of the year had relocated to Vancouver.[10]

After practicing law a further 12 years, in summer 1917 he was appointed senior judge of the Vancouver County Court.[11] He sat on the bench for just over 15 years, retiring in winter 1933.[12]

Hugh St. Quentin Cayley passed away in spring 1934,[13][14] after a three month illness.[15]

The town of Cayley in Alberta is named after him.
