Biography

He succeeded his father as Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 6 November 1816 and he found the grand duchy in a bad state.

He set about raising the standard of education of his subjects by building schools. By the end of his reign, the majority of his subjects could read and write. He also improved agriculture in the grand duchy and abolished serfdom.

Death

He died on 6 September 1860 at Neustrelitz and was succeeded by his eldest son Friedrich Wilhelm as Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Georg was born in 1779. He passed away in 1860.

Georg is [per Dettmann family records] the biological father of Karl Friedrich Ludwig (Louis) Dettmann. Thus, Karl was an illegitimate son of Georg and an unnamed / unknown mother. Karl was born at Schloskirsche [castle] Neustrelitz and "fostered" to his wetnurse Sophia Maria Dettmann (nee Blanck. [1]

Mecklenburg-Strelitz-23 and Mecklenburg-Strelitz-17 appear to represent the same person because: Initially I rejected this MATCH, however, I now acknowledge that they are one and the same person and would like to now MERGE the two entries. Hoping that Marc Whitaker can agree to this proposal.
