Biography

Zebediah Elizabeth Ward was born on 18 Dec 1796 in Sackville, Westmorland, New Brunswick, daughter of Jonathan Ward (1770 - ~1857) and Dorothy (Maxwell) Ward (1779 - >1851).

Her siblings were:

  1. Susanna (Ward) Hicks (1799 - 1864)
  2. Mary (Ward) Tower (1801 - 1879)
  3. Elizabeth (Ward) Estabrooks (1803 - 1883)
  4. Ann (Ward) Harper (1805 - 1882)
  5. Christopher Humphrey Ward (1807 - >1871)
  6. Lucy Ward (1809 - )
  7. Delilah (Ward) Tower (1811 - 1878)
  8. William Ward (1814 - ~1871)
  9. Sarah (Ward) Sears (1816 - )
  10. Reuben Salisbury Ward (1818 - 1895)
  11. Thompson Maxwell Ward (1820 - 1880)

Zebediah married David Rufus Cole (born in Sackville in 1787; died in Sackville in 1861), son of Martin Cole and Zilpha Alverson, on 10 Mar 1831 in Westmorland. Their children were:

  1. Lavina (Cole) Thompson (1831 - 1862)
  2. Lucy Ann (Cole) Tower (1833 - 1912)
  3. Dorothy (Cole) Brundage (~1835 - ~1864)
  4. Edna (Cole) Maxwell (1838 - 1910)
  5. William Charter Cole (1845 - 1870).

Zebediah's son was Frederick Foster Jarvis Ward (1817 - 1892).

Zebediah died after 1861 in Dorchester, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada aged >64.

Research Notes

This child may have different names and is probably female although some have interpreted this person to be male based on the name. Zubadiah, Zubadeth, Yruba, Zuba and Elizabeth are all possibilities. Zebediah is the spelling given in the transcript of the Sackville Township Record Book.[1]

In the handwritten older transcription of the Sackville Township Record Book, the oldest known record of her name, it was spelled Zubedath.[2]

The 1851 census has her name as Zuba but the index has interpreted this to be Yuba.[3]

Note from researcher Doug Ayer:

Stuart,
Further to my earlier message:
David Cole, Sackville, widower, married Elizabeth Ward, Sackville, spinster, 10 March 1831, by Christ[opher] Milner. Witnesses: Henry Babcock and William Charters, Vol. 1, page 383. (I read the original on film) Also found on page 77, Marriage Register, Westmorland County NB, 1790-1856, Part 1, by Ken Kanner and V "Bing" Geldart, 1986, A-383-1218.

Zubediah Elizabeth Cole (Ward) Also Known As: "Zubadeth Zubadath Zebudath" Birthdate: December 18, 1796 (74) Birthplace: Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada Death: 1870 (73) Immediate Family: Daughter of Jonathan Nehemiuh Ward and Dorothy "Dolly" Ward (Maxwell) Wife of David Rufus Cole Mother of Lavinia Thompson; Lucy Ann Tower; Edna Maxwell (Cole); Captain William R Cole and Dorothy Brundage Sister of Elizabeth Estabrooks[5]

Note from Robert Nelson Ward:

"Her name is first given as "Zebadath" on her father's family group sheet, but on her own sheet it is "Zubedath Ward, k.a. (known as) "Zuba"; however, on the subsequent sheets of her children, it is "Zubediah". This final one must be an error, as the "iah" suffix seems to be a masculine suffix in the manner of Obadiah, Jedediah, Zephaniah, etc. Of course, there is "Copiah Rice" in this database too... Also, on her own sheet, her year of birth is given as "1796-1801", where on the first sheet it is clearly "18 Dec 1796"." [6]

In the 1851 census her name looks like Yruba. This must be where Frank Walker got her name.[7] You could easily read it as Zuba, which makes more sense when you have more data. [8] Frank's family tree was the first reference I found that had the wife of David Cole. I already had the Zebadiah Ward listed as a male. So did Doug Ayer.[9] Then I found Doug Ayer's reference to David Cole marrying Elizabeth Ward.[10] The birthdates were so close and the lack of other alternatives gave me the idea that these were the same person. Robert independently made the same connection based on his late father's work with the Wards.

In the late 90s, I went through every document I could find looking for a reference to Zebediah Ward and found none except for the birth reference. The Sackville Township book was maintained at that point by Nehemiah Ward who was very thorough when it came to recording his own grandchildren. The book didn't actually give the gender of the child, only the masculine name. For these reasons, I don't believe a male child existed. Likewise, I looked for an Elizabeth Ward that could have married David Cole that wasn't already accounted for. Again, none was found. After discussing this with Robert N. Ward and Doug Ayer, we agreed that it is unproven. However, seeing the name Zuba/Yruba in the 1851 census and not just a transcript clarifies it for me. Also, Elizabeth Estabrooks used Betsy, not Elizabeth, so it's not improbable that Zuba could have used Elizabeth at her wedding and then reverted to her first name by the 1851 census. Since then, many sources list the wife of David Cole and the oldest child of Jonathon Ward as the same person. This is possibly due to Robert and I publishing this connection on our trees, neither of which is still online.

In 1861 James Brundage's mother in law is given as A??ibah Cole age 66. See the attached image. I suspect that someone thought that Zuba was a short form of Azubah which is a slightly more common name than any other alternative.

It's possible that she was named after this historical person. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zubaidah_bint_Ja%60far

3 Feb 2020. I noticed today that Zilpha Cole is indexed as Yilpha. The split screen shows that her entry and Zuba's were written in the same hand. This is further evidence that the name is actually Zuba, not Yuba or Yruba.[11]

It should also be noted that her probable son, Frederick, named his first daughter Zuba.
