Research Notes

Possible grave? Raymoure-1 03:16, 13 May 2020 (UTC): Nope. Found a death record for the Norman Johnson who passed in 1901 and it's not him; right birthplace but wrong parents. Raymoure-1 03:31, 7 May 2024 (UTC): Actually this is him! Initial research had wrong parents. Possible guardians?

Raymoure-1 03:31, 7 May 2024 (UTC): Have confirmed Flora and Guy Johnson aren't his biological parents via military pension records. Working to confirm whether there is another Norman Johnson or if these were his guardians in 1850.

Hi, Stephanie! Great find! Apologies for the delay, I work full-time and am chronically wicked tired ;) I've asked American Origins, LLC who has been kindly handling scanning the 54th MA pension files in DC for the last few years to prioritize this one. Would you be interested in editing the unedited scanned images and uploading them to his profile if this is our guy and possibly doing some transcription work? Thank you for considering!

Hi K! I'm helping out with the USBH 1880 Census project and am currently on working on making profiles of the household of Norman Hector, living with his wife Salina and two daughters Clara and Minnie in Avon, Hartford, CT. While doing some research I came across a Civil War Pension index for Norman Hector alias Norman Johnson in the 54th Regiment, which includes a pension for himself and a widows pension for his wife Salina. (application #s 538556 and 757708). As this man appears to also have been born in Sheffield per his marriage record to Salina, I was wondering if you had any chance to access the pensions I referenced above? I'm curious as to if there were two men in the 54th from Sheffield with similar names and I feel like the pension records would help!

Best, Stephanie

p.s. Just to confirm: the pension was for 54th MA and not 54th USCT, correct? There was a USCT 54th troop in Arkansas that causes confusion sometimes, though I think the Sheffield is a strong indicator that this isn't one of those times.

Yep! I just double checked the Civil War Pension Index on Ancesty and it is Company A, 54th Mass Infantry! :)

Hi Stephanie! We now have the full pension records and I'm starting the process but can confirm you are correct! Did you wind up creating any profiles that will need to be merged for Norman, his wife, or their children? I'm starting the work of correcting his parents based on his death record.

That's so exciting! I do have profiles for his wife and his daughters Minnie and Clara. I'll put the merge requests in for the three of them! :)
