Biography

When Rollin Benjamin Lane was born on May 28, 1854, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, his father, Obadiah, was 29 and his mother, Olive, was 23. He married Katherine Azubah Glyn in 1896. They had one child during their marriage. He died on August 23, 1940, in Hollywood, California, at the age of 86, and was buried there.

Rollin B. Lane was an early Hollywood resident; a capitalist and philanthropist who donated large sums of money for parks, libraries and orphanages. However, if he is known at all it would be for a street named for his mother, and for the home he built more than a century ago, which is now one of the oldest standing in Hollywood. In 1909, Lane named his home the “Holly Chateau,” but after he died in 1940, the property was sold. Since 1963, it has been known by its more celebrated name: the Magic Castle In Hollywood, California. Address: 7001 Franklin Ave, Hollywood, CA.

Rollin B Lane Jr, was my grandfather. The family story was that Rollin Lane Sr. adopted his brother's illegitimate child. Recently a historian, George Siegel, did some research and found that RBL Sr.'s brother had died as a young child, so that oral history been thrown into question. My hunch is that Jr was Sr's biological child, but that one had to come up with a socially acceptable story back then. I have a picture of Sr. standing before the Lane Library in Missouri(?) and he is the spitting image of my grandfather.
