Biography

WARNING: DO NOT CONFLATE WITH Reynolds-29860. See research notes, below for a discussion of Rebecca Reynolds' possible origins.

Rebecca Reynolds married Azariah Crandall on 15 April 1755 in Stonington, Connecticut.[1] They had the following children:

  • John, born c. 1760, married Amy Keeler[1][2]
  • Sarah, born c. 1763, married Thomas Lawrence[1][2]
  • Joseph,[2] born c. 1765, possibly died 2 January 1804, married Sarah _____[1]
  • Elizabeth,[2] born c. 1767, married Abraham Cook[1]
  • Azariah,[2] born c. 1769, married first to Saloma Slocum and second to Sarah Smallwood; removed to Virginia[1]
  • William, born c. 1772, married first to Eunice ____, second to Jerusha Ackley[1][2]
  • Nathaniel,[1][2] born 20 March 1774, died in Virginia; married Rebecca Simpkins
  • Olive, born 5 August 1779, died unmarried 17 October 1843;[2] owned property[1]
  • Reed, born 9 October 1781,[2] died 31 March 1868, married Elizabeth Thornton[1]
  • [possibly] Reynolds[?], who married Margaret Sincerboux in 1806[1] (not named in J.C. Crandall's book)

Azariah and his family removed from Stonington, Connecticut to Beekman Precinct (or Poughquag), Dutchess County, New York in about 1774.[2]

Rebecca died about 1782/3, probably in Dutchess County, New York.[1][3] Her husband remarried to Sarah Carey and had two more children. Azariah died in February 1808 in Beekman Precinct, New York.[2]

Research Notes

Birth and Parents

It appears that there were two Rebecca Reynolds, both daughters of different James Reynolds, who were born in Connecticut about the same time and whose information has been conflated over the years.

It was previously thought that the Rebecca Reynolds of this profile (wife of Azariah Crandall) was born 27 October 1738 in Stonington, Connecticut. Two secondary sources covering the Crandall family give this date and place of birth and call her the daughter James Reynolds and Rebecca[2] Burdick.[1] A 1736 marriage record for James Reynolds and Rebecca Burdick was found in Stonington, Connecticut,[4][5] BUT the only Stonington birth record found for a Rebecca, daughter of James, is "Rebeccah, dau James, b Feb 11, 1746".[6] If Rebecca was born in Stonington in 1746, she would have been too young to be married to Azariah Crandall in 1755; however, it is possible that Rebecca (Reynolds) Crandall's birth was mistranscribed or simply was not recorded. There are no other birth records in Stonington for children of James Reynolds. Until original records are consulted, we may never know.

A Greenwich, Connecticut birth record was found for another Rebecca Reynolds who was born there on 27 October 1738. The birth record gives her different parents: James Reynolds and his wife Phebe.[7][8][9] The wife of James Reynolds of Greenwich is Phebe Fowler and they married in Greenwich in 1731 and had at least ten children there.[9][10] Two secondary sources covering the Reynolds family show a Rebecca, daughter of Phebe and James, with the 27 October 1738 birth date; however, neither of those sources names a husband for Rebecca or gives her a date of death.[11][12]

Stonington and Greenwich are over 100 miles apart so it is doubtful that the Rebecca born in Greenwich was married in Stonington. However, it should be noted that both families (the Azariah Crandall family and the Greenwich Reynolds family) eventually ended up in Dutchess County, New York, giving the two families a later connection.

To add more confusion, another birth record was found for a Rebecca Reynolds, daughter of Capt. John Reynolds and Rebecca, who was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on 9 August 1739. That Rebecca Reynolds appears to have married John Belding in 1760.[13]
