Biography

Mary Jane Pollock was born on 31 October 1838, in Pennsylvania, to William Pollock and Mary Ballentine. [1]

In 1850, she was living in East Bradford, Chester County, Pennsylvania, with her parents and siblings. She was in school. [2]

She married Evan Davis, in 1857/1858. According to the 1900 census, she had had twelve children (nine of whom were alive in 1900), apparently including: [3]

They moved to Juniata County, Pennsylvania, about 1867. She became a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Episcopal Church, and remained a member until she died. [4]

In 1870, she was living in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, with her husband and their children George, Jesse, Ellie, William, and Mary J. [5]

In 1880, she was living in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, with her husband and their children Jesse, Margaret E, William J, Hannah, Evan, and Benjamin. [6]

In 1900, she was living in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, with her husband Evan and their great granddaughter Edna M. [7]

In 1910, she was living in Fayette Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, with her son WIlliam J and his family. [8]

On 31 October 1910, she died, at her son Benjamin's house, in Walker Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. The cause of death was chronic Bright's disease (two years' duration). On 3 November 1910, she was buried in the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Oakland Mills, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. She was survived by six sons, three daughters, and one sister. [9]

'DEATH OF MRS. MARY J. DAVIS'
'Mrs. Mary J. Davis, wife of the late Evan Davis, deceased, died October 31, 1910, at the home of her son, Benj. F., of Walker township, aged 72 years. Interment was made in the Mennonite cemetery. Her six sons acted as pall bearers.'
'The deceased was a daughter of William and Mary Pollock, of near Downingtown, Chester county, Pa. When quite young she was convered at the Grove M. E. church, Chester county, Pa. Coming to this county fourty-three years ago she united herself with the Pine Grove M. E. church, of which she has been a most consistent member. She was a kind and loving mother and a most grateful friend.'
'Mrs. Davis leaves to mourn their loss six sons, three daughters and one sister, who are George L., of Lewistown, Pa., Jesse E., of Fermanagh township, Margaret E., wife of Michael Gearhart, and Hannah A., wife of Jerome Amy, both of Evendale, Pa; William, Jr., of Fayette township; Benj. F. of Walker township; Mary J., wife of Mr. Diem, Ewan and Atmore, all of Chester county, Pa., and Mrs. Margaret Kerr, a sister, who resides at Thompsontown Pa.'
