Biography

Silas Tilton Sr. was born about 1740 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts, USA as the second child of John Tilton Jr. and Sarah Gibbs. He had seven siblings, namely: Cornelius, John III, Jane, Sarah, Mary, Eunice, and Ebenezer. He died in 1817 in Easton, Washington, New York, USA. When he was 25, he married Joanah Churchill,daughter of Ichabod Churchill and Rebeckah Curtis, on 28 Nov 1765 in Plympton, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA[1].

In 1766 he purchased from Samuel Allen 8 acres on the North Shore of Martha's Vineyard, abutting an unnamed river and pond on the west side of the property. He also acquired the “privilege of building a mill on said river” (V.10, p.571-Dec. 13, 1766 )In 1766 Silas Tilton (cordwainer) purchased from Samuel Allen eight acres on the North Shore abutting an unnamed river and pond on the west side of the property. Also acquired the “privilege of building a mill on said river” (V.10, p.571-Dec. 13, 1766). By 1781 he had built a mill. See reference to mill deed Samuel Allen (Yeoman) to Silas Tilson (Cordwainer). “Land in the northern part of the land that I live on next to the sea...near the stream or brook that leads from the mill...” (V.12, p.292 – Oct. 3, 1781).On April 14, 1791 Silas Tilton (yeoman) sold to Vinal Skiff (1759-1829, weaver) 34 acres at Kiphiggon with buildings, mill, water rights, etc. (V.13, p.279). Banks states that Tilton moved to Easton, NY.The operation of, if not the title to the mill passed from Vinal Skiff to Stephen Skiff (possibly his son: 1787-1857) as indicated in the following deed reference: “Beginning at the West end of a rock and marked B on the East side of Stephen Skiffs Mill...” (V.26 p.321 – March 27, 1837)

In 1771 Silas owned the folowing: one house and shops, annual worth of land of £1:15:0; 2-cattle, 26-goats and sheep, s-swine, 5 acres of pasture, 1 cow the pasture to keep.; Mass Tax Valuation List) Sometime bef. 1781 he built a mill.

He was counted in the census in 1790 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts, USA. Children: 1790 (Census of MA says that in 1790 Silas had 4 boys and 5 girls). On 14 Apr 1791he sold 34 acres at Kiphiggon with buildings, mill, water rights, etc. to Vinal Skiff (1759-1829, weaver) (V.13, p.279).)

In 1791 Silas and his family removed to Easton, NY. (Banks)) Bet. 1797–1805 (Silas ) served on jury for trial between Seth Goodrich and Darius Clarke,

On 11 Mar 1799 Silas's son, Ichabod witnessed a deed for John & Bethiah, & Ebenezer & Hepabah of Cambridge NY. In 1803 he paid a Tax Assesment in New York, USA He was counted in the census in 1810 in Easton, Washington, New York, USA.

He served in the military in Massachusetts, USA. He was employed as a Cordwainer. FamilySearch ID: (KGMW-HKW)

  4. Joanna Tilton was born in 1774 in Dukes County, Massachusetts, USA. She died after 1817.
  5. Ichabod Tilton was born between 1774–1784 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts, USA. He died after 1817.
  6. Rebecca Tilton was born in 1776 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 26 Jun 1862 in Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts, USA.
  7. Deborah Tilton was born in 1778 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts, USA. She died in 1793 in Easton, Washington, New York, USA.
  8. Silas Tilton Jr. was born about 1781 in Chilmark, Dukes, Massachusetts, USA. He died between May–Sep 1838 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA. He married Elizabeth Spencer about 1800 in New York, USA.
