Biography

Aaron was born about 1790 son of Aaron Tryon. He married Rebecca (Rebekah) Kneeland. They had at least 5 children: Henry, Richard, Julia Ann, Albert, and Sarah.

Research Notes

In the marriage record, he is of East Windsor and she of Hartford. Given that Aaron Tryon had a son of the right age and lived in East Windsor, this Aaron seems almost certainly to be his son.

Aaron is in the 1820 census of Hartford, CT, age 26-44, with wife 26-44, two sons <10 and two daughters <10, and another woman 26-44. On 2 Sep 1821 their children Henry, Richard, and Julia Ann are baptized in Newington, suggesting one daughter has died [1]. On 31 Mar 1822 their son Albert is baptized in Newington [2]. In 1825 he and his wife, Rebekah, are admitted to the church in Manchester, CT, with a letter from their church in Newington, CT. The same Manchester record indicates they are church members in 1829 and "his w., watch & care withdrawn Aug. 29, 1837". "Watch & care withdrawn" was a church punishment for unrepentant sinners. Aaron and Rebecca Kneeland are noted as parents of Albert F. Tryon in his death record [1].

No further evidence of children Henry or Richard has been found. The family is not found in the 1830 or 1840 census with the last suggestion that Aaron is living being the church notice above in 1837. His wife Rebecca is next found in 1850 in New York City without Aaron.

The evidence for Julia Ann, another later daughter Sarah, and the life of his wife Rebecca after his death is a bit of a house of cards but it's what we've got. Julia Ann Tryon, b. 19 Dec 1819 NYC, d. 23 Aug 1862 Keyport, Monmouth, NJ, m. Capt. James Madison Treat ,16 May 1835. James died at sea in 1844 before their last child, James Madison Treat, Jr., was born on 10 Feb 1845. James Jr. died Aug 1851 in NYC [2]. In the 1850 census of Brooklyn, NY, there is a Julia A. Treat, b. 1819, with 5 yr old son James, who lives with Sarah Wilson, b. 1827. Sarah is the wife of Charles M. Wilson, b. 1821, of Ireland with children Julia 2, and Frederick C. Wilson 4. Julia and James are from CT, while the others are from NY [3]. These same Julia, Sarah, and Sarah's children are also found in 1860 in Monmouth, NJ, and living with them is Rebecca Tryon b. 1793 in CT [4]. Sarah remarried in early 1860 to George Minor who is also widowed with children. They are found in 1865 and 1870 in Monmouth, NJ, with Rebecca Tryon living with them [5] [6]. Rebecca died there in 1873. Sarah continues to be found in that location until her death [7] [8]. Sarah's son Edwin died in 1892 and shares a headstone with Rebecca [9]. Sarah died in 1895 and is in the same cemetery [10]. While no relationships between Rebecca, Julia Ann, and Sarah are specified in these documents, it seems clear that Julia and Sarah are daughters of Rebecca.
