I also have seen Sawtle. I found her birth record in Ancestry: Mary SAWTLE, b. 19 Nov 1640 Boston (however, if you look back a previous page, it clearly says Watertown!!), dau of Richard & Elizabeth Sawtle. Also the same with NEHGR Early Records of Boston, pg 162 (need to go back sev pages and you'll see Watertown). This info needs to be added so that others will know why it's Watertown, not Boston. (Back then the surrounding towns registered with Boston). Anyway, this clearly states her parents.
Both MA Charlestown VR and Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 states her last name as SOATLIE, however, the supplemental Torrey book clearly says this: JOHNSON, Joseph (1637-1714) & 1/wf Mary SAWTELL (1640-1644/5); m 19 Apr 1664 Charlestown [REG 126;5]. Shouldn't we change the two names Soatlie and Sawtell around?
Someone is deleting comments on this profile. Please don't. IF Mary daughter of Richard Sawtell was the Mary Soatlie who married Joseph Johnson, her LNAB should be Sawtle, which is the name on her birth record. Sawtell is also acceptable since her father was also in the records with that spelling. The only instance of Soatlie is the marriage record. So it should be in Other Last Names. All that said, we don't have solid documentation to confirm that Mary Soatlie was dau of Richard Sawtell.
Joe, Kellogg and Threlfall cite Genealogies of Charlestown Families for Mary dau of Richard Sawtell as the Mary Soatlie who m Joseph Johnson. See Dale C. Kellogg and John B. Threlfall, "Richard Sawtell of Watertown, Mass.," in NEHGS Register, volume 126 (Jan 1972):5. But the Charlestown book doesn't name her parents. :-(
Charles, do you know why Mary Soatlie (as it is spelled in the marriage record and most secondary sources) is thought to be the same as Mary Sawtell? As far as I can tell there are no records to support this and the names are not that phonetically close.
