Biography

Descendant of Edward Fuller, Mayflower Passenger.

Demis Fuller was born on 1 Oct 1742, in Hebron, Connecticut, where she lived all her life. ^[1] She was the second child and oldest daughter of Ebenezer Fuller and Mary Rowley. ^[2] At the time of her birth, Hebron was in Windham County which had been formed on 12 May 1726. When Tolland County was created from a portion of Windham County on 13 October 1785, Hebron became part of the new county, and remains so today. ^[3]

On 13 Dec 1761, when she was 19, she married Solomon Huntington, ^{[4] [5]} who was 23 and a saddler. ^[6]

Demis and Solomon had 10 children, all born in Hebron during the years 1764-1787. (See Solomon Huntington for list) Solomon died 4 Jun 1798 leaving Demis as the Head of the Household in the 1800 census, along with 3 of her children, probably Jared (16), Laura (13) and Philoxeena (21). ^[7]

Demis herself died 31 Aug 1800, at the age of 57, ^[8] probably in Hebron as the 1800 census and her will indicate. ^[9] Some family genealogy books indicate she died in East Haddam, Conn., but original sources do not back that up.

The burial site for Demis is not known, it is probably in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut as her husband, Solomon was buried in the Old Hebron Cemetery in 1798. ^[10]

Research Notes

The first name of the woman profiled here is unusual. It has been published in various sources over the years with many spellings, including Demis, Dimis, Dinnis and Dimmis. To determine how it was spelled during her lifetime, I examined images of her original marriage and childbirth documents. In all but one of the twelve examples I found, her name was spelled “Demis”, including the birth record of her namesake daughter, “Demis”, so that is the spelling I have recorded here.
