Biography
Edward was born in 1814 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to John and Elizabeth Eliot Ritchie.[1][2]
Edward married Abigail Russell Pope and they had at least the following children:[3]

- Andrew M 1846
- Eliza Eliot 1858
Edward Samuel Ritchie was the inventor of the liquid compass later adopted by the U.S. Navy, along with variations on the induction coil and other navigation aids. See his wikipedia page here Wiki, and a page showing his compass in the London Museum of Science here LMoS.
