Walter Raymond Taylor was born to Walter Taylor and Ida Criswell on 27 February 1913 in Quintette, Escambia County, Florida.[1]
When he was just 5 years old, his mother passed away, leaving him and his older brother with their father.
In January 1920, they all lived with Walter Sr's brother, Charley Taylor in Walnut Hill, Florida. Charley and Raymond's father worked on the log train. [2] In April of the same year, his father remarries to Willie Mollie Pringle. [3]
In 1930, the family rented a home on F Street in Pensacola, Florida. His brother, Allen, had married and his wife also lived with them. While his father and brother worked at the sawmill, Raymond worked as a bayman on the waterfront. [4]
Marriage and Family
On 16 Dec 1935, Gladys Crooke and Raymond Taylor married in Pensacola, Florida. Her mother and his sister-in-law acted as witnesses.[5]
In 1939, the couple lost their only daughter,Doris Taylor, to influenzal meningitis at just 8 months old. [6]
In 1940, the couple had two sons and lived in Escambia County, Florida. Raymond worked as a government laborer for the Works Progress Administration.[7][1]
In 1948, the couple lived on Green Street in Pensacola, and Raymond worked as a carpenter [8]
By 1960, the couple lived in a house on Massachusettes Avenue[9] in Pensacola that Walter had built himself. The house began with one bedroom for the couple, and a lean-to kitchen. The children slept in the main room until Raymond added on the extra rooms. [10]
On 14 Aug 1975 their marriage ends in divorce. [11]
Before the family built the house on Massachusettes, they lived briefly in Orlando while Raymond looked for work. It was only for a period for about 3 weeks, and the family lived in a tent.
While Raymond built the house on Massachusettes Avenue, the family lived in a tent they furnished with an actual dresser and a bed. A hurrican blew through Pensacola. The two younger sons hid under the bed in the tent while Raymond and the oldest son ensured the tents stakes remained in the ground. [10]
Raymond was a Mason , member of West Pensacola Lodge No. 296. [12]
