Benjamin Jackson was born 5 Mar 1751 in Morris County, New Jersey to Joseph Jackson and his first wife Annie. Benjamin served in the Morristown, New Jersey Militia in 1776. The 1887 Jackson Ledger at HCPD says: "Benjamin removed from Morris County, New Jersey to Ohio in 1814." By 1833 he was living in Morris Twp, Knox Co., Ohio.
O. B. Robbins book: "Benjamin owned the old Homestead up to 1814, when he sold it and removed to Ohio, where he died June 6, 1842. He and his wife Abigail are buried in Cemetery near Bellville, Ohio; grave marked with a tall monument, aged 90 years and 3 months. He left seven children, six of who were living at the time of his death. Benjamin served as a sergeant with New Jersey troops. His application for a pension was executed June 13, 1833 at which time he was living in Morris Township, Knox County, Ohio, having moved there....He later removed to Bellville, Richland County, where his son Benjamin Jr. lived."
A wonderful recap of the migration from New Jersey to Ohio via wagon train over the mountains to Knox County, Ohio, gives a lot more detail about Benjamin. There is a second article in "Introduction to Virgil Allen's Papers" that is a [history of Benjamin's life and times, including his church life and his application for pension.
OBR quotes his daughter Phebe's obit on pg 59: "Mrs. Vennum's parents were of old Puritan stock, honest, hardworking pioneers; her father being engaged in both coopering and farming."
The records in the office of the Adjutant General of New Jersey credit Benjamin with performing service on seven occasions. In each instance he served in the Eastern Battalion of Morris County Militia, and each time in the capacity of sergeant, - this record shows:
Long after he removed to Ohio, Benjamin made claim for a pension.
His great-grandson Daniel Webster Jackson based his SAR application on Benjamin's service. That application is #95042.
His great-grandson Albert Judson Jackson based his SAR application on Benjamin's service. That application is #10337.
Copied from the 1897 SAR Application #10337 of his great-grandson Albert Judson Jackson: "He [Benjamin] resided at the time in Morris County, in the State of New Jersey. The applicant remembers, when a child about five years of age, being at the residence of this Ancestor, on his farm located on the highway at a place called 'Half-way', between the city of Mount Vernon in the State of Ohio, and the Village of Fredericktown, in the same State. The Ancestor's wife Abigail, was alive at the time; and my parents were visiting with them. We remained with the family of my Ancestor, over night. I distinctly remember that during the evening we were there, my great-grandfather related to my parents and others present, incidents that he recalled as happening while the war was in progress, and especially concerning the movements of the Colonial forces."
Old maps and O. B. Robbins spell Belleville with an e in the middle, newer maps leave out that e.
Notes copied from his Find-a-Grave memorial# 72419235: "Benjamin is buried with wife and son, in Belville cemetery according to cemetery records. I suspect the stone at Old Fredericktown cemetery is a memorial stone while burial took place at Bellville cemetery. I am still looking for more documents to support this beyond just cemetery records, which are known to have mistakes. I believe two memorials need to be maintained for Benjamin as two nice tombstones exist in two well separated locations. I still think documents or book will surface shedding light on the burial details. TJD
"Oscar Burton Robbins' book, pg 20 says "He and his wife Abigal are buried in the old cemetery at Bellville. The inscription on his monument reads 'Benjamin Jackson died June 6, 1842, aged 91 years, 3 months.' Hers reads "Abigal wife of Benjamin Jackson died Nov 1st, 1843, aged 88 years, 10 months, 25 days.' You have a picture of his monument, perhaps the inscription is weathered by now.
"I do NOTE that Robbins' record of Benjamin differs slightly by saying Benjamin was b 5 Mar 1752 and died 5 Jun 1842. (I had not noticed until now how Abigal's name was spelled in the Robbins book and maybe on her gravestone! Later papers spell it Abigail.) Janie"
